History and Heritage
The Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar Bahadur, laid the foundation stone for the college building on August 7, 1951. The first building was completed and inaugurated on September 24, 1956. UBDTCE remained affiliated to the University of Mysore until June 1, 1992, when it was transferred to Kuvempu University as a Constituent Engineering College.
In 2009, UBDTCE became a Constituent Engineering College of Davanagere University. The institution later joined Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, on February 24, 2011.
Academic Growth
The college began with a single undergraduate program in Civil Engineering in 1951. It later added Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering in 1957, Electronics & Communication Engineering in 1970, Computer Science & Engineering and Instrumentation Technology (now Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering) in 1984, Industrial & Production Engineering in 1996, and Robotics & Artificial Intelligence in 2024. The current undergraduate intake across programs is 550 students.
The postgraduate program in Production Engineering Systems Technology (PEST) began in 1987. In 2003, the college started seven additional PG programs: Computer Aided Design of Structures (CADS), Environmental Engineering, Thermal Power Engineering, Machine Design, Digital Communication and Networking, Power Systems Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering. MBA and MCA programs were introduced in 2011, bringing the current postgraduate intake to 479 students.
Affiliation and Accreditation
UBDTCE is affiliated to VTU and approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and the Government of Karnataka. Four undergraduate programs received NBA accreditation in 2001 for five years. Computer Science & Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering were accredited by NBA in 2009 for three years, and the accreditation process for additional departments is ongoing.
The college was among fourteen institutions in Karnataka to receive the World Bank aided TEQIP Phase-I grant, which provided nine crores to improve infrastructure and academic quality.
